The tragedy of art is the misalignment of merit and the perception thereof. A hype is a classic example of positive (from the creator’s perspective) misalignment. Van Gogh is a classic example of negative misalignment, a poor laggard who may enjoy the fruits of his labour rotting under the ground. Van Gogh went unrecognized, ostracized, and is now celebrated as many who have come before him, and many who will come after him. Therefore, I declare here, the Wisdom of the Crowd does not apply to art. Kevin Focke
About This Quote

The Wisdom of the Crowd is the idea that people are more intelligent than an average individual. This means that crowds of people can be more efficient at decision making than any one person. The Wisdom of the Crowd also refers to the idea that if you gather a large enough group of people together, their collective intelligence is greater than any one person. This is why companies like Yelp and Trip Advisor use crowd-sourcing to gather reviews on restaurants, hotels, etc.

The problem with this idea is that it does not always work. Because people are too emotionally attached to their personal opinions, they do not always act rationally. Therefore, some artists cannot get recognition or appreciation based on their work.

They will never be able to see the glory of their art because they will always be overshadowed by others who are better than them in some way.
